Fear in the
Night (1972)
Female hysteria and a one-armed killer make up the archaic and fairly cliched basis for this psychological horror film from Hammer Films. Director Jimmy Sangster stages his scenes theatrically and with overemphasis, even when nothing is happening. The ominousness that imbues every single character and scene is supposed to make you feel skittish and invested, but mostly just creates a distance between you and what's happening on the screen. Veteran Peter Cushing gives his character a wicked vulnerability which makes him easily the most interesting among the four principals. But the story and the execution of it is quite pulpy from start to finish.
