Review
An upper-class, middle-aged,
world-weary quadriplegic (François Cluzet) decides to hire the young,
boisterous, and brash Senegalese immigrant Driss (Omar Sy) as his live-in
caregiver, thinking he won't last a week before giving up. The 2011 French
comedy-drama Intouchables was a sleeper hit all over the world. Based on
a true story, this tale about an unlikely friendship across societal boundaries
may seem stereotypical at first glance, but with its wonderful earnestness and
bubbly joie de vivre, it soars above its own clichés. And what definitely isn't
stereotypical is the film's unvarnished look at life as a disabled person. Like
Driss, Intouchables treats Philippe as a peer, refusing to handle him
with kid gloves. A truly uplifting experience that somewhat remarkably is the
most profitable French film of all time.
