Review

This dark, disturbed and philosophical horror-thriller offers enough spite and tension to keep you pinned from start to finish. Director Karyn Kusama uses her characters like pieces in a chess game, and you never quite know who are pawns and who's the queen, or who are black and who are white, for that matter. Yes, it may be speculative and gloomy, but The Invitation makes sense on a higher level than the usual horror-genre one. In a fine ensemble cast, John Carroll Lynch stands out.
