The Outfit (1973)
Robert Duvall was at perhaps his most productive when starring in this hardboiled, disillusioned crime/gangster movie about a bank robber who finds himself up against the Chicago Outfit after hitting one of the banks they control. John Flynn's direction is unglamorous and unassuming, which makes the film unremarkable seen in retrospect; there's little imminence or tension left here after forty years of aging, except perhaps Duvall's ever-credible appearance. The Outfit remains well-made and well-told, however, and it has its fair share of stark, gripping realism.
