Review

Reisen til julestjernen has become a Norwegian christmas classic, thanks mainly to its (over)exposure on the state channel NRK. It is a classically structured, at times delicately alluring children's fairytale wrapped in an eerie stylistic palette. The acting is useful, and the writing is of fine technical, if not the most creative quality. Of course, the film suffers from backward special effects in a couple of crucial scenes, but it is blessed with fine set design and costumes. On its yore, archaic level, Reisen til julestjernen is not without realism. Comedian Harald Heide Steen Jr. brightens it all up with his energetic, amusing performance.
