Review

Sigve Endresen's second full-length documentary takes us inside the walls of Oslo Prison, where a group of young repeat offenders have been given the chance to serve out the remainder of their sentences in the C-3 ward – a rehabilitation programme that offers the inmates greater freedom and responsibility in preparation for life back in society. Endresen has become a more mature filmmaker since For harde livet, and Store gutter gråter ikke is both a more polished production and a more probing portrait. There are hints of criticism here, but Endresen is much more interested in the destinies of these young men – why they have ended up where they are, and how they might best find a way out of a life of crime and drug addiction. It's a moving and also rather important document.
