Review
Although visually astounding in its
crude, crisp way, this 1982 sci-fi yarn for kids mostly falls flat
in its quest to merge the perceived inner workings of computers and
video games with familiar storytelling concepts of protagonists
versus antagonists. The main problem isn’t necessarily
writer/director Steven Lisberger's uninspired and messy plotting,
but rather the overwhelming lifelessness with which it’s all imbued.
The actors try their best to deliver their lines with conviction
amid the emptiness, but it seems unlikely that they understood much
of what was going on. The film gained a cult following among kids
who were probably just happy to see their burgeoning world of gaming
dealt with on the big screen – with the added pleasure that their parents
most definitely didn’t get it at all.
