Talented character actor with a versatility that ranges from the explosive (Martha Marcy May Marlene) to the fragile (Me and You and Everyone We Know), Hawkes broke through in a series of independent films during the 2000s, while already in his 40s. He began his film career as early as 1985, however, and worked his way up through minor roles and bit parts before becoming the breakout actor from Miranda July's critically acclaimed Me and You and Everyone We Know. Since then, Hawkes has been in high demand for both independent films and larger studio productions, often cast in supporting roles as menacing or troubled characters.
