Sensitive, good-natured character actor of American film, with a rugged appearance and a characteristic cleft nose. He was well suited to roles of ambiguity, in which his characters faced moral dilemmas, such as in A Steetcar Named Desire, Baby Doll, or One-Eyed Jacks. Although gentle, Malden brought a power and physical presence to his acting that could be daunting. Appeared opposite friend Marlon Brando in three films.
