One of the most talented American actresses of her generation, alongside names such as Meryl Streep and Glenn Close. With a less conspicuous and often more introverted acting style than the two aforementioned, Spacek broke into the film world by playing insecure teenagers (although she was considerably older in real life) in the 1970s, notably in films such as Badlands and Carrie. In her best roles, Spacek delivered deep, sensitive, and multilayered performances that endeared her to both critics and audiences. Although her unconventional beauty made her easily recognisable, she managed to maintain a certain mystique that granted her a semi-cult status. In later years, she has appeared increasingly in independent films, often to rave reviews, such as in The Straight Story and In the Bedroom.
