Review
With its aesthetics of nebulous
dreamscapes and enhanced B-movie sensibilities, this new sci-fi
horror film directed and scored by multidisciplinary artist Flying
Lotus (Steven Ellison) is a fun little excursion in genre tropes and
bombastic images. What lifts an otherwise run-of-the-mill story is
the filmmaker's ability to give his well-worn tropes a tweak – an
identity – which gives the film its own distinct rhythm and flow,
making the horror elements eerily effective at their best and merely
acceptably clichéd at their worst. The evocative retro-electronic
score is the film's best asset, whereas the special effects
are presented with a slickness that almost masks their cheapness.
