Review
A wonderfully devoted, sensitive
performance by the young Kirsten Dunst (she was 17 during this
shoot) is the nucleus for this teen drama sleeper from 2001. The
film has the distinctive look and feel of the turn of the
millennium, though in an inspirational, productive manner that effectively captures a bygone zeitgeist and youth generation.
Crazy/Beautiful evokes a melancholy for its characters and milieus, which in retrospect is heightened by a realisation of
what today's youth have
lost in the meantime. The relatively inexperienced director John
Stockwell demonstrates an ability to find subtlety in most
situations, and the only thing holding this picture back is a
slight but persistent sense that some of the Dunst character's transgressions were
left on the cutting room floor. Jay Hernandez and Bruce Davison give solid supporting performances
as her love interest and father, respectively.
