Review

Strong performances and an at times fascinating, chaotic portrayal of mental illness are the nucleus of this psychological drama, with director Lynne Ramsay's nonlinear narrative and jarring cuts illustrating the downward spiral of Grace (Jennifer Lawrence), a woman suffering from severe postpartum depression – and perhaps a few other issues. The story is powerful, yet the film drowns in its own misery and ultimately lacks purpose beyond the character study. Veterans Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek deliver charming turns as Grace's in-laws.
