Review
As far as smart-phone-based mystery
thrillers go, this slickly crafted film directed by Christopher
Landon (son of Michael and writer of
Disturbia)
is not at all bad. Drop immediately finds its identity as
postmodern genre fare and confidently plays with it, without ever
letting up. Synopsis: Violet Gates (Meghann Fahy) is a single mother
set for her first date after the death of her abusive husband. The
setting is a luxurious top-of-the-tower restaurant where she meets
Henry (Brandon Sklenar), a man she has become acquainted with via a
dating app, but as soon as she gets there, she starts receiving
strange, ominous drops and texts from someone who seems to be
watching her – and who threatens to kill her son. Landon may not
exactly be a virtuoso, but he plays this particular tune well, even
if you've certainly heard some of its themes and chord changes
before. The tech side of things is handled unobtrusively, and the
semi-clever plot is driven forward by effective, 90s-style thriller
devices that leave you satisfied, albeit never quite blown away.
