Review
Guillermo del Toro deconstructs Mary
Shelley's iconic, much-adapted novel and stitches it together in his
own image, giving it new life in the process. Rarely has a
Frankenstein adaptation looked better than in del Toro's Gothic
style; his lavish sets and lush cinematography (courtesy of Dan
Laustsen) create a world of
wonder befitting of Shelley's famous creature. Casting Oscar Isaac
and Jacob Elordi, two of the most talented among the current
generation of actors, in the two seminal roles is another wise
choice. The two bring the necessary power to the baron and his
creature, even in the occasional segments in which del Toro treads
prosaic waters. Unlike the most recent full-fledged, big-budget
treatment of the story – Kenneth Branagh's 1994 film
Mary Shelley's
Frankenstein – del Toro's picture is a true cinematic
adventure. Also with Mia Goth as Lady Elizabeth, Felix Kammerer as
William, and Christoph Waltz as Heinrich Harlander, who fills in for
the traditional Igor character.
