Review

Peter Weir’s anti-war epic about Australian soldiers’ involvement in the Gallipoli campaign of World War I is fairly straightforward and unremarkable narratively, but still manages to make something of an impression through its daunting tragic elements. Mel Gibson and Mark Lee play two young Western Australian sprinters and friends who enlist in the Light Horse, and both actors deliver sympathetic performances, even if their characters remain essentially superficial. There’s fine on-location cinematography shot in South Australia and Egypt by Russell Boyd. The film won a host of awards at the 1981 AACTA Awards and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film.
