Review
The old superteam of director Robert
Zemeckis, screenwriter Eric Roth, and star Tom Hanks combine forces
for the first time since
Forrest Gump for this
technically and narratively inventive slice-of-life picture. The
concept is what it would be like to watch time pass from a single
fixed point – a mounted camera – all the way from the Mesozoic Era,
through colonial times, and into the middle-class residence of
various families, most notably the Youngs, consisting of dad Al
(Paul Bettany), mom Rose (Kelly Reilly), and their adolescent son
Richard (Tom Hanks) with his girlfriend Margaret (Robin Wright).
Here is a spectacle, complete with remarkable and only slightly
distracting AI-based digital de-aging, a nonlinear narrative
structure, and numerous nifty cuts and transitions – all devised to
compensate for the immovable point of view. It's a rather impressive
and charming little film, despite a few contrivances and some overly
sentimental storytelling. The de-aging is more effective than what
you usually find (such as in
The Irishman) – they've
actually succeeded in making Tom Hanks look young, though he still
sounds unmistakably old.
