Review
An idealistic 7th-grade teacher in a
German Gymnasium finds herself caught in an increasingly tight web
following a mishandled investigation into a series of petty thefts
at the school. This German awards favourite purports to offer – and
at times approximates – a tensely realistic portrayal of the
complexities and hardships of being a modern-era schoolteacher (or
pupil, for that matter). But despite filmmaker İlker Çatak's best
intentions, Das Lehrerzimmer hinges on a number of dramatic
scenes that come off as contrived and become distractions from the
truths and social critique the film aims to explore. There are
solid, wholehearted performances, not least from lead Leonie Benesch
– all of which could have been even more effective under more
skilled guidance.
