Review
The setting is a luxury SUV, the budget
is low, and the devices are Bill Skarsgård, Anthony Hopkins, and
some cutting-edge automotive gadgets. Skarsgård breaks into and is
subsequently locked in a car belonging to the disillusioned old
misanthrope Hopkins, and the two soon become locked in a battle of
wits. This remake of the 2019 Argentinian film 4x4 is able to
tap into feelings of claustrophobia, exhaustion, dehydration, and
starvation through Skarsgård's impressive physical performance. And
we also get some quite interesting discussions on morality, framed
as vigilante justice with an inverted angle. Despite this, Locked
can never quite escape its small scope and predictable twists and
turns. And for all of Sir Anthony's former power and splendor, his
sadistic antagonist William here is more reminiscent of a cozy
grandfather than of Hannibal Lector.
