Review

Here's how to do a reboot of an old, successful comedy franchise – with a nifty balance between reverence, self-referential humour, and new jokes in a simliar vein to the original. Liam Neeson is surprisingly well cast as the son of Leslie Nielsen's character from the original, and although he may lack some of Nielsen's deadpan delivery, he makes up for it with generous doses of self-mockery. Creator Akiva Schaffer alternates between piling it on to excess (the opening sequence) and slowing it down to embrace simple wordplay and silly background buffoonery, and the result is a pleasant and sometimes very funny homage to one of the greatest comedy successes from the latter part of the previous millennium.
