Review
A sinister, fun-drained action thriller
starring a handsome, bearded Sylvester Stallone and a typically icy
Rutger Hauer, in his American film debut. Nighthawks was looking to
trade on several recent, in-vogue action successes: The film has the
aesthetic of
Dirty Harry, the New
York-pessimism of
Death Wish, and a megalomaniac
villain out of
James Bond. The only problem is that all of the
characters are dour clichés. This particular brand of
1970s/early-1980s action had clearly run its course. Billy Dee
Williams appears in an utterly thankless role as Stallone's partner.
The workmanlike direction is credited to Bruce Malmuth, though was
reportedly mostly Stallone's work.
