Review

An arrogant boss (Dylan O’Brien) and the socially awkward, low-level employee he has been bullying (Rachel McAdams) are the only survivors when the company’s plane crashes. After they are washed ashore on a desert island, the tables are turned and the balance of power is shifted. In this modern hybrid between Cast Away and War of the Roses, Sam Raimi may have aimed for playfully over-the-top – with a hint of his usual visceral special sauce – but it never becomes either playful or excessive enough to make a true impression. The feminist vigilante themes feel sadly worn, and Raimi narrates without subtlety, using far too broad brushstrokes and an ineffectively glossy palette. There is not much here of the fresh, perverted angles and images he once became famous for.
