Review

The 2025 reboot of Superman doesn’t bother with backstory or character development there’s no time for that when you’ve got two hours of non-stop action and visual effects to power through. David Corenswet is the new Superman, and he’s a good-looking, old-fashioned all-American hero complete with a gullible belief in humanity's inherent goodness. He’s in many ways a return to Christopher Reeve's version, only less charismatic. Once DC have presented their newfangled CGI companions and gimmicky tricks, Superman reveals that there’s a very useful script driving this vehicle forward, with an emotional nerve to boot. Not least thanks to Nicholas Hoult’s delicately compelling version of Lex Luthor (the best since Gene Hackman), a few clever surprises, and a visual spectacle that is strikingly effective, if hardly subtle, the film is able to suck you into its fast-paced, trope-pirating realm. If you have any objections along the way – whether in regards to logic or the abundance of characters appearing without proper introduction – you won't have time to fret over them, because the film steamrolls ahead with its efficient editing and effervescent, enjoyable action. The technical aspects of Superman's powers are brilliantly handled and conveyed, especially the physics of his flight. You get the feel of his tremendous speed in a way that has not been realised before. What the film lacks is an ability to create a self-sufficient foundation from which to take itself seriously without the need for small self-jabs or half-hearted comic relief that don't quite work. Luckily, these never concern the character of Superman himself, which is a relief on par with the fact that the appearance of the so-called "Justice Gang" is thankfully limited.
