Review
Here's proof that modern horror can
still be made with a classicist spirit and temperament. Zach
Cregger's Weapons is a surprise box-office hit that strikes
the tricky balance between smartness, suspense, and playfulness.
Although the basic concept of spirit possession is as old as time,
Cregger finds a fresh angle and grounds his film in a 2025 reality
without making it feel timebound or ephemeral. His achievement is a
result of a healthy resistance to letting trends and vogues infuse
his aesthetic and narrative, and the winners are both the filmmakers
and quality-hungry horror fans and moviegoers. With its small-town
Americana nostalgia and shifting perspectives, Weapons knows
its place in the horror timeline, but also has the confidence to
assert itself. Cregger's knack for powerful human drama fortifies
the film's horror elements. And though the chills may not always be
spine-tingling, they always feel organic and tangible – which for
seasoned viewers is far more important.
