BIO

For a couple of decades Steven Spielberg was renowned as the planet’s most successful and perhaps also influential filmmaker – creating movies that defined the 1970s and '80s culture of American teens and tweens going to suburban movie theatres on their own to watch spine-tingling sci-fi movies and mushy fantasy pictures with a whiff of intellectualism. After showing what he could do with the expertly made TV-thriller Duel in 1971, Spielberg went on an unprecedented run of box-office successes that kicked off with the quintessential pulp horror, Jaws, in 1975 and continued with the cerebral sci-fi fable Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977, the lightweight adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, and arguably ended with Spielberg's most famous children's movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. Alongside these zeniths of entertainment, Spielberg continued to make more socially aware films, including The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Amistad, and what many consider both his magnum opus and his most personal film, Schindler's List.
