Review
Explosive, sympathetic, sarcastic
and reasonably clever – The Rock is a full-fledged action flick
circa 1996. As directed by Michael Bay (Bad Boys) and produced by
the team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (Beverly
Hills Cop, Top Gun), the film strikes just the
right balance of smartness and confusion to work within the realm it creates. And with
Nicolas Cage's atypical action hero, plus Ed Harris and Sean Connery
adding zest and star power opposite him, the film also offers its own
perspective on the fine line between morality and immorality. Perhaps
the best among the several large-scale summer blockbusters of 1996 (Independence
Day, Twister,
Mission: Impossible).
