Review
John Grisham's morally predictable but
legally intricate universe is put under the spotlight in this well-cast
and satisfyingly complex, though somewhat emotionally clichéd film.
Director Gary Fleder should have been able to instill more suspense into
the narrative – his work is so streamlined and unchallenging that
Grisham's solid story becomes relatively bland and comfortable. The
format feels a bit too TV-series-like for us to fully immerse ourselves,
but the film has a well-written cast of characters that keep you fairly
engaged throughout. Old-timers Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman get by on
technique and experience, while both John Cusack and Rachel Weisz are
well-cast, even if they don't exactly create sparks.
