Talented, unconventionally beautiful leading lady in both American mainstream and independent cinema since the late 1990s. She burst onto the scene with her powerful and offbeat, award-winning performance as trans man Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry (1999). Swank is one of the few actors to have been nominated for only two Academy Awards for Best Leading Role and won both – the second for her performance in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby (2004). In the years that followed, she was often typecast in roles portraying women whose identities fall outside traditional gender norms – frequently strong, independent characters with typical masculine traits.
