Review
Old
pals Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, perhaps at the height of their powers, teamed up
with new director Edward Zwick for the adaptation of David Mamet's "Sexual
Perversity in Chicago", a romantic comedy of sorts with a little more ambition
than the average Hollywood rom-com, but which still steps in many of the same
traps (one of which is the inclusion of the lead stars' one-dimensional and
annoying friends). At the heart of the film, however, is the relationship
between Lowe and Moore, which begins, develops and crumbles before us in a
familiar, but still heartfelt and sweet fashion. Lowe and Moore give it
their all, and they have an undeniable chemistry between them which fits
Mamet's crisp, authentic dialogue. It's nice to see that the two stars, who both
have been accused of lacking dramatic potential throughout their careers,
actually are at their very best in the film's most defining and profound scenes.
And through their youthful energy and sculptural, natural beauty, they make
About Last Night... a vibrant film, despite its fair share of awkward
moments and a somewhat slight, cliched ending.
