Review
Eduardo Sánchez, who
was one half of the duo behind
The Blair Witch Project, is back
with his second feature, entitled Altered. The alteration which
is implied in the title is of a familiarly alienish type in which nasty
aliens abduct stupid American youngsters for some reason or the other.
On a thematic level, Altered is a complete rip-off from nearly half a
century of sci-fi/horror literature, but what Sánchez actually manages
to accomplish here, after a badly acted and very unengaging intro, is a
cleverly executed and surprisingly mind-based battle between the Adam
Kaufman character and the quite fascinating alien life-form. Ultimately,
the strength of Altered is the rather complex psychology of these
aliens, which of course is hidden behind the film's all too conventional
narrative structure.
