Review
Jaume Collet-Serra returns to more
familiar territory after his largely unsuccessful foray into the
superhero genre with Black Adam two years ago. This time, he
is back with material he not only does well, but has almost
perfected over the years: planes, threats, and ticking clocks. Liam
Neeson was rested this time, so instead, we meet up with Taron
Egerton as an underachieving TSA officer who suddenly finds himself
as a pawn in what appears to be a covert terrorist operation. Jason
Bateman is the antagonist on the other end of the line, directing
our protagonist like a puppet master… lest his pregnant girlfriend
die. Not surprisingly for a setup like this, Carry-On
alternates repeatedly between absurd implausibilities and clever
ideas. But thanks to Collet-Serra’s steadfast pacing and the
script’s effective momentum, you’d do well not to get sucked into it
all. The director certainly knows how to build suspense. And both
Egerton, and particularly Bateman seem to be enjoying themselves.
