Review
Gene Hackman and Denzel
Washington are in fine form and deliver some sizzling interplay in this
post Cold War era Mutiny on the Bounty inspired thriller aboard
the ballistic missile submarine USS Alabama. The guys taking us there
are producers Simpson/Bruckheimer and their favourite director Tony
Scott, who returns to the military genre for the first time since Top
Gun and does so with conviction if not exactly subtlety. The film's
narrative structure is almost painfully familiar, but the picture has
got the confidence and acting power to get you sucked into its do or die
premise, which of course is about USA, Russia and nuclear weapons.
Hollywood weren't quite ready for the end of the Cold War just yet.
There are fine supporting performances from George Dzundza and Viggo
Mortensen.
