Review
Nicholas Jarecki's
long-awaited follow-up to his clever 2012 debut
Arbitrage
is this crime thriller about the triangle of drug abusers, traffickers
and the pharmaceutical business, set on and around the border between
Canada and the United States. Jarecki shows his skill as a writer with
his interlacing storylines and well-drawn characters, even if a couple
of them are borderline archetypes (Armie Hammer, Lily-Rose Depp). The
most riveting part of the story is the one concerning university
research scientist Dr. Brower, played with brilliance by Gary Oldman,
who is unwilling to let himself be silenced by the large pharmaceutical
company Northlight. Oldman's nuanced performance underlines the fine
line between virtue and dishonesty in a complicated business world.
There's enough truth and insight in Jarecki's story to make Crisis
resonate and feel important, even in its somewhat less inspired
segments.
