Review
This story may have seemed like a good
idea on paper, but it never quite comes alive on screen in this
overplotted, strangely unengaging dramedy starring Rosanna Arquette,
Madonna, and the 1980s. The latter infuses everything from the style of clothes and moviemaking
to the soundtrack, which in sum may
well represent the best entertainment value Desperately Seeking
Susan has retained up until today, although this is far from
composer Thomas Newman's best work. Arquette is fine in the lead, and Madonna
is well cast in what is essentially a movie version of herself. The
two of them roam around New York City and find themselves in
supposedly comical situations, but the movie takes us through far
too much dilly-dally in order to arrive at its obvious conclusion.
