Review
John McTiernan was replaced by Renny
Harlin as director for the much anticipated follow-up to
Die Hard,
and out with McTiernan went also a human touch. This sequel is more mechanical
and more bound to the 1980s action genre; meaning less distinctive. John McClane
still is the talkative and relatable cool-guy, but everyone around him are
rather dull movie characters. And when Harlin fails to make the story flow, the
setup starts feeling as staged as it obviously is. There are numerous references
to the fact that the 1990s have begun, but the picture very much feels like the
1980s, and so do the many noisy but not necessarily spectacular explosions,
action-sequences and special effects. Followed by the much fresher
Die Hard
with a Vengeance five years later.
