Review

This little snap shot of life in Baltimore, Mariland in 1959, centered around a group of 20-something friends and their local diner, is Barry Levinson's homage to his youth. It was also his directorial debut, hailed for its authenticity and understated comedy. Levinson's recreation of the time and place in question is unpolished – a piece of nostalgia without the sentimentality. It's also mostly without a musical score, filled with ad-libbed dialogue, and not at all plot-driven, which gives the picture an aura of being simultaneously sincere and inconsequential. With a number of budding stars in what would become their breakout roles, including Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon, and Mickey Rourke, as the soft-spoken womanizer Boogie.
