Review
Level-headed and detailed, although never
fully absorbing rendition of what is believed to be the only
successful escape from the Alcatraz prison, back in 1962. This was the
fifth collaboration between director Don Siegel and star Clint
Eastwood. And although it was a solid swansong for them and garnered
fine reviews at the time, the film lacks the electric suspense of
their magnum opus
Dirty Harry.
Eastwood is fine in one of his better performances during this part
of his career.
And there is also solid supporting work from Fred Ward, Larry Hankin, Paul Benjamin and Roberts Blossom.
The screenwriter is Richard Tuggle, who went on to pen the Eastwood
vehicle
Tightrope a few years later.
