Review
This film and its lead
characters are music video slick. And to make things worse, the
filmmaking duo Glenn Ficarra / John Requa (Crazy,
Stupid, Love) are absolutely infatuated with their
material. There is no ironic distance and no humour in here; it’s all
about showing off. Which is a shame, because the script is clever and
has potential as a fresh look at modern con artists and swindlers. Leads
Will Smith and Margot Robbie are still quite convincing in their parts
and look to have had some chemistry on set. B. D. Wong is great fun in a
two-scene role as a compulsive gambler, which incidentally is also the
film's most intense segment.
