Review
This ostensibly romantic comedy is
more clunky than romantic, even though Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan deliver some
laughs.
Kline is rather impressive as a happy-go-lucky Frenchman who keeps bumping into
Ryan, who, for her part, travels to France to win back her husband from his young
French flame. The story is a hotchpotch of childlike characters who drift
to and from each other like magnets. To the extent that it works, it's thanks to
Kline and a couple of fun set pieces. The once so skilful Lawrence Kasdan
(The Big Chill,
Silverado)
is on a bad streak, having delivered the vapid
The Bodyguard
and the unengaging
Wyatt Earp over the past few years. And he
continues his downward spiral with this limp film, which he simply cannot
blow enough life into.
