Review
A 1970s crime drama told from
the perspective of the unknowing wife who is forced to learn the secrets
of her husband's thug life the hard way – and how to survive in the wake
of it all. The film looks good and features a quite effective portrait
of the title character, but Julia Hart's direction is inexperienced and
sloppy; she has her characters non-communicating in order to keep the
mystery alive for us. The sometimes unnatural dialogue also reveals a
few anachronisms and is not helpful for building up what turns out to be
a well-executed albeit quite genre-conventional finale. Rachel
Brosnahan's lead performance is solid, but it's Arinzé Kene who has the
most natural presence in front of the camera.
