Review
The style is more akin to the
slick 1980s television crime shows, such as Miami Vice, but the
quirky tone is still very much quintessential John Landis in this rather
obscure 1985 title, which was the director’s first foray outside of
either the comedy or horror genre. Jeff Goldblum plays a depressed
insomniac who, after discovering that his wife is having an affair,
decides to drive to LAX, where a rather freakish encounter with the
beautiful jewel smuggler Diana (Michelle Pfeiffer) sets them both off on
a bizarre adventure around the city trying to escape various menacing
groups and individuals, ranging from David Bowie to Irene Papas. Were it
not for Goldblum’s offbeat natural charisma and the picture’s complete
lack of self-seriousness, the levels of silliness Into the Night
reaches most certainly would have made the film unbearable. But it
isn't; it's almost entertaining.
