Review
The word is that Juror #2 will
be Clint Eastwood's final film before retiring at the age of 94, and
if this is the case, he can be proud of the way he is wrapping up
his 69 years in film. Juror #2 is in many ways a return to
1990s legal thrillers in the sense that there is a clear genre
affiliation in structure and build-up, and at the same time, the
director has the confidence in his material to let the story play
out without pretense or inhibiton. The picture utilises the
relatively unusual narrative tool of an early plot twist, which is a
great way to set the stage but also makes you a little extra wary of
the subsequent developments. Eastwood follows this up by including
an homage to
12 Angry Men which may just be
a bit too literal. Since this is only a small part of the film,
there are one or two of these jurors who come off as cardboard
figures, but luckily, the content surrounding them has the weight
and magnitude to make all the ensuing machinations mostly authentic
– or at least constantly compelling. Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy,
Mad
Max: Fury Road) gives a forceful, introspective
performance in the lead. And there are fine supporting turns from
superb actors by his side, including Toni Collette and J. K.
Simmons. The girl at the bar is played by Clint's daughter
Francesca.
