Review
Director Ivan Reitman’s first film not
made on a shoestring budget wants to be like a summer camp version
of M*A*S*H.
A journey into the Canadian wilderness – expressly, aesthetically,
and morally – together with a bunch of young aspiring comedians and
actors who seem to be enjoying themselves, even if they cannot
always make that feeling rub off on us. Reitman and his team are in
full creative flow, which has made the film feel raw and boisterous,
but also terribly uneven, as if a quality filter was never in place
and every idea was greenlit. Bill Murray makes for a pleasant
new acquaintance in his feature film debut, even if his jokes and
lines are hit-and-miss. The film gained a cult following, arguably
more for speaking to a certain demographic than for the quality of
filmmaking or comedy it offers.
