Review

A joyride for anyone growing up during the 1980s, as well as a fairly fresh romantic comedy. The characters don’t act as human beings when the film’s structure needs them to serve other purposes, but Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are thoroughly charming in their own usual ways, and they are cute and occasionally funny in their mutual scenes. Still, the most enjoyable asset of Music and Lyrics is its delicate combination of ridiculing and celebrating the good old '80s and the wonderfully synthetic music that came out of that decade. The original songs, by Adam Schlesinger, are almost as good as the classics themselves, and the opening music video is worth the price of admission alone.
