Review
A harrowingly realistic
opening act about a home birth sets the stage for this at times heartrending
drama by Hungarian filmmaker and Cannes Festival favourite Kornél
Mundruczó (White God). This first part of the film is so agonizing
and brilliantly made and played that you wonder how Mundruczó can possibly follow
it up. And unfortunately, the ensuing healing processes, conflicts
and conclusions are oddly predictable and a tad contrived. Still, the
solid acting and the handling of the continually valid
interpersonal strifes give the picture weight and make you watch with
interest, if not fascination. A fine Vanessa Kirby received an Academy Award
nomination for her lead role, and Shia LaBeouf is equally engrossing as her
partner.
