Review
A daring and valid inside look
into the modern porn business, with only slight hints of affectation and
message by Swedish filmmaker Ninja Thyberg, based on her own
award-winning 2013 short. Sofia Kappel plays the 19-year-old Swedish
girl Linnéa who travels to Los Angeles determined to become a porn star,
and Pleasure tells the story of how she loses her last drops of
naïvete and becomes a full-blown cynic, without simplifying her
psychological transformation or the business in general. There are a
handful of really powerful segments in here, not least the depiction of
Bella Cherry's first BDSM scene, and the film is at its best when
Thyberg treats the material without prejudice or emotion, letting the
audience make its own conclusions. Kappel gives a powerful and nuanced
lead performance in what was her debut movie. Several of her co-stars
are real-life porn actors.
