Review
The
student film feel is inescapable, but writer/director Damian Szifron
will get high grades for his clever ideas and effective combination
of HD realism and Tarantinoesque sudden violence. As often is with
anthology films, the payoff is more detached and perhaps satirical
than what you might feel you deserve for your emotional investment
in the characters. This is film from an intellectual point of view,
but it can be equally rewarding if you're willing to accept the
premises. Some segments work better than others, such as the eerie
opener "Pasternak" (which I hope wasn't of any kind of inspiration
of for Andreas Lubitz) and "La Propuesta", before Szifron is
good-hearted enough to let us end with a little positivity on behalf
of humanity – even if it is a depraved form of positivity.
