Review
This
film was Robert Benton's first outing since his hugely successful
Kramer vs. Kramer,
and yet again he teams up with a young and somewhat raw Meryl
Streep. The story is overplotted, and the homage to Hitchcock and
other thrillers from his era is both overdone and carries too little
distance, which in effect conceals the homage and makes the film
come off as more of a bad copy. Still, Streep shows glimpses of her
pure talent, and Roy Scheider carries the film agreeably forward
through everything from tense and well-shot pursuit scenes to
ludicrous psychobabble.
