Review
The format and the idea is
good for this dramedy aspiring to capture the zeitgeist of 1990s dating
culture in the L.A. area. The writer, producer and star of the show is
Jon Favreau. He plays a hopeless romantic who misses his ex almost
pathologically, surrounded by pals who are self-proclaimed Lotharios.
They tell him to move on by the way of fleeting sexual conquests; he's
holding out for the big L. The film's insights are often feeble, and
some of the setups feel staged. But in the end, Favreau's character
turns out to be genuinely relatable, and the film cleverly steers clear of
simple answers to its oftentimes timeless dilemmas. Some might enjoy the
film a little bit extra thanks to Vince Vaughn's larger than life
character and performance, which became something of a breakthrough for
him.
