Review
The first feature from Spanish
filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar (Abre los ojos, The Others,
Mar
adentro) feels just as much as a student movie as it
actually is. Made on a shoestring budget, Tesis taps into the
world of snuff, an enticingly taboo subject for those of us who were
young and curious during the age of the VHS. Besides the
controversial subject matter, however, this is a disappointing
chiller with a fairly uninspired script and a workingman spirit. It
is cumbered with 1990s TV-style production values and cinematography,
and an unbearable score, which make this a particularly drab viewing
experience today.
